PROTEA BANK. THE SHARK MECCA
Al sur de Unkomaas, cerca de Margate, se encuentra la pequeña población de Shelly Beach. Desde allí se accede a este arrecife, a unas 6 millas de la costa, ideal para hacer drift dive en busca de pelágicos. Al igual que Aliwal Shoal, Protea Banks presenta un buceo para expertos buceadores. Protea Banks es un arrecife más profundo que Aliwal Shoal y, por ello, está mucho más expuesto a las corrientes. A una profundidad de 30 m. son frecuentes enormes meros patata y tortugas. Podemos avistar bastantes pelágicos como tiburones martillo, puntas negras, “raggies”, tiburones toros o zambezi, el gran tiburón ballena y es posible que hasta el tiburón tigre.
